Domaine Bernard Faurie’s small Northern Rhône vineyard spans some of the best soils in Hermitage, including Greffieux, Bessards and Méal. Regrettably for his followers, 2020 is his final vintage before retirement. He had been threatening retirement for years, having already handed the majority of his vineyards, including those in Saint-Joseph, to his daughter and son-in-law. His departure will undoubtedly see his wines acquire an even more devoted following. Some of his Syrah vines on his tiny 1.7 hectares are over 100 years old, and his winemaking style echoes that of the three generations before him. From his humble cellar in Tournon, which fits just a few barrels, he has crafted soulful and exciting wines for many years. His methods are meticulous; soils are ploughed by horse, he uses whole bunch fermentation and his use of oak is fastidious, resulting in spiced, floral and perfumed reds.
