Maderia wine was discovered by an accident of circumstance, found when barrels of wine, sent on long sea voyages, improved due to their exposure to tropical heats. While Blandy’s no longer ship wines with the purpose of building character, they use replicative ageing processes coupled with seven generations of expertise to make their distinctly enduring wines. Volcanic soil and undulating slopes touched by a mild sub-tropical climate give these wines their characteristic acidity, minerality and intense fruitiness. While Blandy offer a portfolio of blends and single grape varieties, it is their Malmsey, Sercial and Bual that stand out for their distinctive flavour profiles. Malmsey being renowned for its full-bodied complexity, Sercial for its fresh, vibrant aromas and Bual for its medium sweet palette.
