Historic Château L’Evangile is considered one of the top wines of Pomerol. Wine critic Jancis Robinson, describes it as having “a long track record of excellence.’ A track record which dates back to the 18th century and makes it one of the oldest estates in Pomerol. It has been part of the prestigious Rothschild family since 1990, who also own Château Lafite. Lying on the eastern side of the appellation, the estate sits close to the border with < a href="/search?searchtext=st%20emilion">St-Emilion, separated by little more than a road, and its influence can be seen in l’Evangile’s sand and clay soils, as well as its style. The vineyards are predominantly Merlot, with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and some newer plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon. Since the Rothschilds took over, l’Evangile has seen even greater growth. New cellars allow for the individual vinification of separate plots, gravity fed systems were installed and a significant amount of the vineyard was replanted. Michel Rolland as consultant winemaker is achieving even greater successes and the long-lived l’Evangile has been said to rival Pétrus for its quality and finesse.
