Domaine Bertrand et Axelle Machard de Gramont

Domaine Bertrand et Axelle Machard de Gramont is one of Burgundy’s hidden stars. The domaine is headed by talented winemaker Axelle who is gradually gaining well-deserved recognition for her range of organic red and white Burgundy. Though she may lack prestigious vineyard names to attract the label drinkers, her 6 hectares of organically farmed (and certified in 2014) Pinot Noir and Aligote vines are meticulously managed, while her winemaking is detailed and precise. All her wines are imbued with an appealing and elegant charm and are worthy of serious attention.

Axelle joined her father Bertrand in 2005 after a long stint in Paris where she was introduced to the organic wine movement. On her return she set about reinvigorating the domaine. She now works her magic from off-the-beaten-track cellars outside the village of Curtil-Vergy in the Hautes-Côtes, a few hundred metres up in altitude and separated from Vosne-Romanée by thick forest. With minimal intervention and sparing use of new oak, she makes a beautiful array of Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée reds and a particularly mouthwatering Aligoté from a parcel of vines up near the cellar. Her flagship wine is the Nuits-St-Georges, Les Terrasses des Vallerots, which is planted on steep terraces just above Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains.
