La Mission Haut-Brion shares more than just a name with its famous First Growth neighbour. Sitting opposite each other in the wine region of Pessac-Léognan (although La Mission also lies in the suburb of Talence rather than just Pessac) they are both owned by the Clarence Dillon family and have the same winemaking team. La Mission Haut-Brion can trace its history back to the 16th century, and its name was derived from the missionary community of Lazarist monks who took over the property in 1664. It passed through several hands over the centuries until finally being bought by the Dillons in 1983. Since then it has gained a reputation to rival Haut-Brion: in fact wine critic Robert Parker, has awarded La Mission Haut-Brion more 100-point scores than any other wine in the Médoc and Graves.
