Founded by Michael and Heather Bunker in 2014 and now run by daughters Janine and Sophie with winemaker Liam Idzikowski, Danbury Ridge in Essex is arguably the finest still wine estate in the UK. The team here are bottling wines that critics have already favourably compared to some of the finest addresses in the world, from top names in Burgundy to the best of California.

2021 Pinot Noir, Danbury Ridge, Essex Dry | Red | Still | 13%

Poised and energetic, this is top-drawer Pinot Noir. Crunchy, vibrant, pure red fruit, with notes of wild strawberry and lifted cranberry shining through. Classy and elegant, will be fascinating to see how this develops over the next four to five years.

2021 Chardonnay, Danbury Ridge, Essex Dry | White | Still | 13.5%

Intensely mineral on the nose with hints of yellow plum and Clementine, and a touch of lime. There’s lovely weight and tension to the fruit and a fine bead of acidity running through the zingy, saline finish. A really very classy Chardonnay.

Based in the sunny and sheltered Waveney Valley in South Norfolk, Flint Vineyard (named after its free-draining flint and gravel soils) produces wines from 6 hectares of vines, using a combination of innovation and respect for tradition. The focus is on high-quality, low volume still wines, using the best fruit possible.

2022 Pinot Noir Précoce, Flint Vineyard, Norfolk Dry | Red | Still | 12%

Flint Vineyard’s 2022 Pinot Noir Précoce, is made from an early-ripening clone of Pinot Noir that was hand harvested in September and October from their own small parcel and from Martin’s Lane vineyard in Essex. A dry and hot summer provided small bunches with more tannin and flavour concentration than usual. Fifty percent whole-bunch is used here, leading to a light, crunchy and aromatic style – a baby Burgundy if you will, full of rich, cherry aromas. The palate is wonderfully textured, with smooth, fine-grained tannins, packed with gorgeous blackcurrant and cherry fruit and a hint of sweet spice.

Ready: 2023 - 2028
2023 Bacchus Fumé, Flint Vineyard, Norfolk Dry | White | Still | 11%

A rounded style of Bacchus displaying ripe, fleshy pear and apple notes on the nose. The palate is soft, slightly creamy and textured but also fresh and crisp. The finish is long and laced with pink grapefruit. Fermentation and ageing in 3rd-fill oak barrels lends texture and encourages aromatic development rather than oak flavour, pushing Bacchus towards the style of its parent variety, Riesling, and the 2023 Fumé demonstrates this brilliantly.
