Charles Heidsieck set up his eponymous Champagne house in 1851, having gained experience of the trade under his uncle’s tutelage, owner of Piper-Heidsieck. What set Charles Heidsieck apart was his forward thinking, earning him the name ‘Champagne Charlie’ in American high society as his order book was filled. This drive and determination to be the best continues to this day and although setbacks including a civil war, imprisonment and payment via the deeds to Denver Colorado saw his fortunes flounder and then rebound magnificently, Charles Heidsieck has become one of the most sought-after Champagne houses. Charles invested in 47 chalk cellars where the champagnes are still blended and bottled and their NV Brut is quietly aged for at least three years. Rather than own vineyards, Charles Heidsieck relies on a trusted relationship with some of the region's finest growers to provide top quality grapes and blending is made from over 200 reserve wines. Since 2011, Charles Heidsieck has been owned by the Descours, a family keen to retain its family-run roots. Although the smallest of the Grandes Marques, Charles Heidsieck’s vintage and non-vintage Champagnes have a following the world over.
