Château de Fargues

Château de Fargues has been owned by the Lur-Saluces family since 1472 and the 16th generation are now working the vines on this historic estate. The Lur-Saluces are a big name in Sauternes, once owning the legendary Château d’Yquem until it changed hands in 1999. However, despite the longevity of the de Fargues estate, its first vintage was only produced in 1943 when current incumbent Alexandre’s uncle recognised the potential of the terroir to make some of the most impressive Sauternes out there. As a result, it is an unclassified Sauternes. There are over 200 hectares of land which surround the fortified château, but just 15 of these are vineyards while the remainder are arable or pasture land. Today, de Fargues is the only remaining Sauternes estate to age their wines for three years before release, the traditional way of making these remarkable wines. And that marks them out as unique, making some of the most complex, deep, and intense wines you’ll find anywhere.
