Château Gazin is on its way to join the elite of Pomerol and is becoming a sought after Right Bank red. It has a long history, dating back to at least the 18th century when the château was built on the ruins of the Hôpital de Pomeyrols to receive pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela route. Despite being a near neighbour of Château Petrus, the estate underachieved for years. It was the installation of Nicolas de Bailliencourt that heralded its change in fortunes. The Bailliencourts dit Courcol are one of France’s oldest families and Nicolas is now the fifth generation at the helm of Gazin. His radical overhaul of the vineyard, its management and Gazin’s winemaking process has resulted in an estate with rising fortunes. Its sought after vineyards on the Pomerol plateau are home to well-placed Merlot grapes, which make up around 90% of plantings, with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller still amounts of Cabernet Franc.
