The Grand Vin of Pichon-Longueville (Baron) is made from a selection of vines known as the ‘Butte de Pichon Baron’. This historic Pauillac parcel was already producing wine when the estate was formed in 1694, acquired by Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville as part of his wedding dowry (although those original vines have long since gone). The vineyards were split in 1850 between the children of Baron Joseph Pichon de Longueville and so, Pichon-Baron (as it is now more commonly called to separate it from its rival estate) was born. In 1987 it was bought by the AXA insurance group who own several other Bordeaux estates. They installed a state-of-the-art winery, and hired Jean-Michel Cazes (from Château Lynch-Bages), and more recently Christian Seely, to impart their substantial expertise. Like its rival Pichon-Lalande, the estate's well-placed 73 hectares of vines run adjacent to First Growth, Château Latour.
