The clay and limestone soils of the 11-hectare Clos Rougeard in the Loire Valley have produced some of the finest wines of the Saumur-Champigny appellation. Dating back to the 17th century, the Clos Rougeard domaine was in the hands of the Foucault family right up until 2017. The last Foucault brothers, Jean-Louis and Bernard, were pioneers of organic methods and this tradition is being maintained by Martin and Olivier Bougues, who also own Château Montrose in the Médoc. Clos Rougeard wine develops and matures gracefully, aging in oak barrels for two years before seven further years in tufa cellars seven metres underground. The result is wine of great depth, finesse and elegance. Le Clos, Les Poyeux and Le Bourg are the reds and the Brézé a dry Chenin.
