The Gendrier family has been making wine at Domaine des Huards in the Loire Valley since 1846. The seventh generation, Jocelyne and Michel Gendrier, are now at the helm. Their wines are made under the AOC Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny designations and across their vineyards they grow Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and, probably their most fascinating white grape, Romorantin. Romorantin was introduced in the 1500s, when rootstocks of it were relocated by King Francois from Burgundy to his mother’s castle in the town of Romorantin. Today it is responsible for a fragrant, lightly floral wine with a fine vein of acidity. The estate is run following organic and biodynamic practices and care of the vineyards and soils is their prime focus. Domaine des Huards’ range includes red, white, rosé and sparkling wines and their ethos is simple: to create wines which reflect the diversity of the region and to make wines that they want to drink.
