More about Giuseppe e Figlio Mascarello

THERE HAVE BEEN VINES HERE SINCE AT LEAST 1666

The winemaking story of Mascarello starts at the turn of the century when the original Giuseppe Mascarello first produced top Nebbiolo-based wines, and the estate has passed from father to son ever since.

But it is current incumbent Mauro Mascarello who has lifted the estate to the top table of Piemontese producers, with wines particularly prized for their clarity and precision.

They almost fully own the famed Monprivato vineyard, one of the region’s most celebrated sites for growing grapes. There have been vines here since at least 1666, but the Mascarello family acquired the majority of the vineyard in 1904. By 1970, they began producing a single vineyard wine in recognition of the superiority of the land. He also makes the super-rare Ca’ d’Morissio from a few specially selected vines within this vineyard: one of Piedmont’s greatest, and most cultish wines.

Mauro makes wine in the traditional way. He uses the best grapes in the carefully tended vineyard, before taking his time over the fermentation and the wine’s ageing: nothing is rushed in the pursuit of perfection, whether with the legendary Monprivato vineyard, or the more approachable S. Stefano.
