Heymann-Löwenstein
A visit to Heymman-Löwenstein always starts in the vineyard, likely speeding on single dirt tracks in Reinhard’s own Audi station wagon, holding on for dear life. Such is his emphasis on terroir, and each of his wines expressing the effects of soil and aspect on some of the steepest and most compelling sites along the Mosel river. It’s no wonder that Reinhard devotes time each winter to repairing some of the terraced walls that protect these magnifcent sites. He’s the thirteenth generation to make wine here, with 15 hectares all devoted to dry styles and farmed with an emphasis on “energy”, drawing from both biodynamic principles as well as feng shui, and using solar power. Reinhard is a tour de force here, and so are his wines.
