This ‘niche player’ in the port and Douro wines market, established in 1842, remains independent and family run. In 1987, they bought their first property in the Douro valley of Northern Portugal, signalling a new era of hands-on craftsmanship. Further acquisitions in Dão and Bairrada coupled with their dedicated integration of the principles of biodiversity, underscore their commitment to progressive winemaking. It is this unique blend of the modern and traditional that earned maverick owner Dirk van der Niepoort the 2023 Decanter Hall of Fame award and put Portuguese wines on the map. Among their extensive offering, it is the Niepoort tawny and Niepoort ruby ports that stand out.
