Monforte d’Alba
Monforte d’Alba is a large commune at a total of 1031 hectares planted with 441 hectares for Barolo. There are only 10 MGAs named in this commune all of relatively large size, which means producers often add the specific subplot to the official MGA, such as Bussia.
The soils in this commune are some of the oldest in the region but quite diverse, and changing within MGA and between subplots. They are primarily sandstone and chalk, although there are some plots with high levels of clay and high iron content.
The style of the wines is often quite powerful in structure yet with a mineral and saline drive. These are wines that can take time but offer a beautiful, almost sanguine quality after some time in bottle.
