Red Bordeaux Varieties & Cabernet Blends
Cabernet Sauvignon is the Cape’s most planted red variety, and the bold Cabernet-based wines of Stellenbosch have quickly been compared to the Classed Growths of Bordeaux. Indeed, May de Lencquesaing after selling Château Pichon Comtesse bought the Glenelly Estate in 2003 with the aim of creating an iconic Bordeaux Blend in the Cape. Another true benchmark is the Leeu Passant Cabernet Sauvignon made by Andrea Mullineux, as well as - new for this year - Christo Le Riche’s iconic Reserve Cabernet. Cabernet Franc gets an honourable mention as one of the most exciting varieties being made in the Cape today, which features heavily in Pieter Walser’s Confessions of a White Glove Chaser and is star of the show in Lukas van Loggerenberg’s Breton Cabernet Franc.
